2027: ADC Will Not Hand Over Party Platform to Atiku, Obi, or Amaechi – Lukman.
In response to rising concerns about internal divisions and the risk of early election failure, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has instructed all members with presidential ambitions to hold off on declaring interest until the party’s structure is firmly established ahead of the 2027 elections.
This was revealed by Malam Salihu Moh. Lukman, a prominent party figure, during an interview on AIT’s Jigsaw program in Abuja.
Among those speculated to be eyeing the ADC’s 2027 presidential ticket are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 candidate Peter Obi, and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi.
Lukman emphasized that the ADC will not allow its platform to be taken over by any aspirant, saying the party must first be built to function autonomously and enforce discipline among both aspirants and elected officials.
“What we are telling everyone is that party structures will not be handed over to anyone. The party must be strong enough to regulate all members, including officeholders and those aspiring,” he stated.
He added that the current sense of unity among opposition groups is largely due to an agreement not to make early public declarations while party structures are being solidified.
Lukman, a former member of the APC’s National Working Committee, also discussed the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), a broader coalition working to provide a credible alternative to the ruling party.
He described the collaboration between ADA and ADC as a strategic decision aimed at preventing Nigeria from drifting into a one-party system and offering voters a real alternative in 2027.
“A special committee was formed by the coalition to ensure that by 2027, Nigerians will have another viable option. We are determined not to let the country become a one-party state,” Lukman said.
He stressed that Nigerians’ constitutional right to participate in elections must be preserved and extended beyond the dominance of the ruling party.
