2027 Elections: PDP Faces Setbacks as Defections to APC and ADC Increase.
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is facing a wave of defections as the 2027 general elections approach. Two PDP governors Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta) and Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom) have a
lready defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), along with several lawmakers at both state and federal levels. More defections are reportedly being considered.
The party is also losing key figures to a newly formed coalition led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Former Senate President David Mark resigned from the PDP in June, citing unresolved internal issues. He has since been named interim national chairman of the ADC.
Notable PDP members now associated with the coalition include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Chief Tom Ikimi, and several ex-governors Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Sam Egwu (Ebonyi), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Gabriel Suswam (Benue), and Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto). However, except for Mark, most have not formally resigned from the PDP.
This dual affiliation is deepening internal tensions within the party. Former PDP Deputy National Chairman Bode George criticized Atiku and Mark for abandoning the party they helped build, stating that loyalty demands staying to resolve internal issues rather than leaving during a crisis.
Despite this, some PDP members argue that if the party tolerates individuals like FCT Minister Nyesom Wike who serves in an APC-led government while remaining in the PDP others should be allowed similar leeway.
The issue is expected to dominate discussions at the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on July 23, along with preparations for its national convention.
A PDP lawmaker, speaking anonymously, suggested that some members are hesitant to fully commit to the new coalition in case it encounters legal or political challenges.
Meanwhile, PDP Governors’ Forum Chairman Bala Mohammed said the party would engage with other opposition groups only if it maintains its autonomy. PDP Board of Trustees Chairman, Adolphus Wabara, insisted the party will endure despite internal and external pressures.
Adeleke Denies Defection Rumors
Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke reaffirmed his loyalty to the PDP, dismissing rumors of a planned move to the APC. According to his spokesperson, Adeleke remains focused on delivering good governance through his administration’s five-point agenda.
ADC Coalition Dismissed by Tinubu Allies
Presidential spokesperson Sunday Dare downplayed the new ADC coalition, advising them to forget 2027 and prepare for 2031. He argued that President Bola Tinubu remains firmly in control and unmatched in political influence.
Dare accused coalition leaders of pursuing personal gain rather than genuine reform, unlike the coalition that formed the APC in 2013. He stated that none of the current coalition leaders possess the political credibility or followership of Tinubu.
No Threat from ADC, Says Former Rep
Former House of Representatives member Bamidele Faparusi (Ekiti) said the coalition poses no threat to Tinubu’s re-election. He claimed the opposition has no clear agenda and is only focused on seizing power.
Faparusi expressed confidence in the APC’s strength at the grassroots level, predicting a sweeping victory for Tinubu in 2027.
Political Scientists Urge Leaders to Prioritize Citizens
The Nigerian Political Science Association (NPSA) criticized politicians for prioritizing electioneering over national development. In a statement signed by its president, Prof. Hassan Saliu, the association warned that ongoing political distractions are overshadowing urgent issues like poverty, unemployment, and inflation.
The NPSA urged politicians to pause campaign activities and focus on public service, calling for clear, people-centered policy proposals from all political parties.
