2027 Elections: PDP Warns Members Against Defection, Vows Action.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a strong warning to members considering defection, stating that the party will soon take action against individuals working against its interests.
Speaking during a press confer
ence in Abuja, Acting National Chairman Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, alongside other members of the National Working Committee (NWC), reaffirmed the party’s unity and determination ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Damagum made it clear that the PDP remains a cohesive force despite internal disagreements and emphasized the need for members to remain loyal.
“We are drawing the line. Any member attempting to discredit the party should take note—we are watching and will respond at the appropriate time,” he said.
He accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of trying to weaken the PDP by intimidating or enticing its members to defect, but asserted that the will of the Nigerian people, not manipulation, will determine the outcome of the 2027 elections.
“You may try to harass or woo our members, but ultimately, the 2027 election will be decided by Nigerians,” he stated.
Damagum also criticized the APC-led government for its failure to address pressing national issues, including widespread hunger, insecurity, and unjust treatment of citizens. He urged the administration to reassess its policies and take corrective action.
He described the PDP as a party grounded in democratic principles and committed to inclusive, people-focused governance. According to him, the PDP has the structure and resilience to endure political challenges and serve as a reliable platform for national progress.
“We are in a democracy. The people’s voice must be respected. We are not a conquered people,” he said, adding that PDP members must act as ambassadors for the party and its legacy of national development.
While acknowledging that some members might be tempted to leave, Damagum expressed hope that they would eventually return.
“There is no party more accommodating than the PDP. If some members leave, I wish them well, but I believe they will come back,” he concluded.
The PDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) is set to meet from July 23 to 25 to discuss further plans for the 2027 elections.
