Why We Are Using Fashion to Tell Our Stories – Omokaro

Founder of Kukuruku Republic, Collins Osagie Omokaro, has unveiled a fashion-tech initiative aimed at preserving culture and storytelling through fashion.

Omokaro explained that the project blends wearable design with digital innovation by embedding QR codes into clothing. When scanned, the codes unlock content on African history, mythology, art, food, and music.

He described the venture as a fusion of heritage and technology, created to reconnect younger audiences with African traditions.

“We are using fashion as a vessel to tell our stories in ways that resonate with today’s generation. It’s about linking identity with innovation, ensuring our culture is not only preserved but also experienced,” he said.

The launch will include a runway showcase, cultural performances, and the opening of the Kukuruku Republic Experience Store in Abuja, designed as a hub for retail and immersive cultural engagement.

Omokaro emphasized that beyond fashion, the initiative will support local artisans, promote sustainability, and create youth-focused opportunities in fashion, cultural media, and technology.

While acknowledging challenges around scalability and adoption of digital fashion in Nigeria, he expressed optimism that the Abuja launch on August 31 would attract attention from the cultural, creative, and tech sectors, offering new ways for younger Nigerians to connect with their heritage.
