Actress Kate Henshaw has voiced worries about the potential exploitation involved in surrogacy, particularly of financially vulnerable women.

Speaking in an interview on News Central, Henshaw stressed the urgent need for clear and enforceable laws in Nigeria to safeguard the rights and health of surrogate mothers.

She highlighted that surrogacy is a complex process involving significant physical and emotional challenges, and should not be taken lightly.

“Surrogacy can be used to take advantage of women who are struggling financially, where they are simply paid to carry a child without any guaranteed care or protection before and after delivery,” Henshaw explained. “There needs to be a legal framework to ensure these women are properly looked after.”

She emphasized that surrogacy offers hope to those unable to conceive or facing medical issues, but warned that it involves more than just physical changes mental health risks and even life-threatening complications can arise.

“I hope Nigeria will enact effective laws on surrogacy, not just recommendations, but binding regulations that protect everyone involved,” she added.
