Afreximbank Appoints Dr. George Elombi as New President.
The shareholders of the African Export-Import Bank have appointed Dr. George Elombi as the new President and Chairman of the Board
of Directors. He becomes the fourth President since the bank’s establishment in 1993.
The appointment was made during the 32nd Afreximbank Group Annual Meetings held in Abuja from June 25 to 28, 2025, with the formal approval occurring on June 28.
Dr. Elombi will succeed Prof. Benedict Oramah, who has led the bank since 2015 and is set to step down in September 2025.
A Cameroonian, Elombi has been with Afreximbank since 1996, starting as a Legal Officer and rising to Executive Vice-President, Governance, Legal and Corporate Services. Over nearly 30 years, he has held several key roles including Director, Executive Secretary, and Chief Legal Officer.
Before joining Afreximbank, he lectured law at the University of Hull in the UK.
He played a significant role in shaping the bank’s structure and establishing subsidiaries that have enhanced its capacity. As Chair of the Emergency Response Committee, he led efforts to mobilize over \$2 billion for COVID-19 vaccine acquisition for Africa and the Caribbean.
Under his leadership of the Equity Mobilisation and Investor Relations department, the bank mobilized \$3.6 billion in ordinary equity as of April 2025.
In his acceptance speech, Elombi expressed commitment to the bank’s mission, emphasizing its role in industrializing Africa and restoring African dignity. He aims to help the institution grow into a \$250 billion bank within the next decade.
Elombi holds a Master of Laws and a Ph.D. in commercial arbitration from the London School of Economics, and a Maitrise-en-Droit from the University of Yaoundé.
His appointment followed a rigorous selection process including a global call for applications, interviews by an international search firm, and final approval by the bank’s shareholders.
According to the Afreximbank Charter, the President is appointed for a five-year term, renewable once.
