Akpabio to Tinubu: 2027 Re-election Will Be Smooth.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has expressed strong confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s chances for re-election in 2027, assuring him of a much smoother path compared to the tough contest he faced in 2023.
Akpabio made the statement during the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Summit held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Speaking on behalf of the National Assembly leadership, he declared a vote of confidence in Tinubu’s administration.
If the president has done well, it’s our responsibility to acknowledge it. If not, we would hold him accountable. But we’re not discussing impeachment—we’re saying things will be better in 2027,” Akpabio said. He also hinted at growing support for Tinubu across party lines, referencing a senator from the Labour Party who expressed interest in joining the APC.
Tinubu, nearing the completion of his second year in office, emerged victorious in the 2023 presidential election, defeating main challengers Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and Peter Obi of the Labour Party. He secured 8,794,726 votes and won in 12 states, surpassing Atiku and Obi, who garnered 6,984,520 and 6,101,533 votes respectively.
Earlier at the summit, the Progressive Governors’ Forum had also reaffirmed their support for the president with a formal vote of confidence—an endorsement that was later adopted by the party’s national leadership.
The event was attended by President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Speaker of the House Tajudeen Abbas, APC governors, and key stakeholders from across the country.
