Ali Ndume Criticizes APC Leadership, Warns of Political Collapse Amid Defections and Insecurity.

Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, has issued a sharp critique of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), warning that the party could face collapse if current trends of political opportunism and ineffective go

vernance continue.

Speaking in an interview, Ndume, a senior figure within the APC and former Senate Chief Whip, expressed growing concern over the party’s trajectory under President Bola Tinubu. While he remains a member, Ndume didn’t hold back in voicing dissatisfaction with the administration’s direction.

He warned that the APC risks self-destruction, describing the influx of opportunistic defections as dangerous for Nigeria’s democratic health. According to him, many politicians now switch parties for personal gain rather than ideology a practice he believes erodes credibility and undermines the democratic process.

“Defections without conviction weaken democracy,” Ndume stated. “Our party is becoming like an overloaded ship it can’t stay afloat if it continues this way.”

While acknowledging invitations to join the newly forming opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 elections, Ndume said he is staying with the APC for now but that could change. “I still believe President Tinubu can turn things around,” he said. “But if the current direction continues, I won’t go down with a sinking ship.”

Addressing his own political journey, Ndume defended past party switches as driven by circumstances rather than ambition. He reaffirmed his loyalty to individuals he believes in, including former minister Rotimi Amaechi, whom he still considers a capable national leader.

Ndume also gave a critical assessment of the National Assembly, which he described as no longer functioning independently. According to him, it has become a “rubber stamp” for the executive branch, failing in its duty to provide checks and balances.

On national security, particularly in the Sahel and his home state of Borno, Ndume criticized President Tinubu’s leadership during his time as ECOWAS chairman. He argued that diplomatic missteps especially in Niger and Burkina Faso have weakened Nigeria’s regional influence and led to increased insecurity in border areas.

“We missed key diplomatic opportunities. The president relied too heavily on his inner circle, rather than drawing on the wisdom of elder statesmen,” Ndume said, blaming the resurgence of insurgency on poor regional strategy.

In response to recent criticism from a presidential aide who dismissed him as a “frustrated lone wolf,” Ndume remained defiant.

“I’m not beholden to anyone. My loyalty is to the country and to my conscience. I will speak the truth, even if I stand alone.”
