Amaarae Explains Why Eggs Are a Common Part of Ghanaian Meals.
American-Ghanaian singer Amaarae has shared insights into why eggs are a regular feature in Ghanaian diets.
In an interview with Madame Joyc
e, Amaarae explained that in many traditional Ghanaian households, fathers typically received the largest portions of meat, leaving smaller amounts for the rest of the family, especially children. To make up for the lack of meat, eggs were added as an affordable and nutritious source of protein.
She noted that this practice has evolved over time, making eggs a staple in Ghanaian cooking due to their accessibility and cost-effectiveness. Historically, chicken was considered a special treat, often only served during festive occasions like Christmas.
Amaarae said, “There’s a history behind why Ghanaians eat a lot of eggs. In the past, when mothers cooked, the meat would mostly go to the father. Kids would get a small portion of meat and eggs to supplement their protein intake. Eggs became a common solution because they were cheaper and still nutritious.”
She added that while chicken is now widely available, eggs continue to play a significant role in meals, shaped by both tradition and economic practicality.
This cultural background has led to the widespread use of eggs in many Ghanaian dishes today.
