Anti-Tinubu Coalition Gains Momentum with Support from Northern Democrats.

ABUJA – The opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s potential 2027 re-election bid has intensified as the League of Northern Democrats (LND) formally joined the growing coalition working to unseat him.

Dr. Umar Ardo, convener of the LND, confirmed the group’s decision following an expanded meeting in Abuja. He stated that the league would make a final decision on whether to align with an existing political party or create a new one on May 30.

Reading from the meeting communiqué, Ardo highlighted key resolutions:

The LND approved its constitution and leadership.
It pledged support for the National Opposition Coalition Group ahead of the 2027 elections.
Discussions are ongoing about forming a new political party or merging with an existing one.

Two committees were formed to explore the political path forward—one led by Governor Lyol Imoke focused on merging with another party, while another chaired by Governor Rotimi Amaechi explored registering a new party. Ardo served as secretary for the latter.

Former Governor Nasiru El-Rufai reportedly raised the possibility of involving the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the merger talks. A final decision on whether to partner with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), revive the SDP, or establish a new party will be made on May 30. The LND favors the formation of a new party.

On regional issues, the group expressed concern over worsening poverty, insecurity, and unemployment in northern Nigeria. Ardo criticized the 19 northern governors for inaction and called for direct engagement to address these crises.

The LND also condemned what it termed constitutional violations by lawmakers who switched parties without losing their seats, contrary to Section 68 of the Nigerian Constitution. Citing examples from Delta and Kebbi states, Ardo said the group would mobilize citizens to demand accountability from national and state assembly members.
