APC: Atiku, Amaechi, El-Rufai United by Desperation for Power.
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has sharply criticized former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-governors Rotimi Amaechi and Nasiru El-Rufai, accusing them of being united not by ideology but by a sh
ared desperation for political power.
This response follows allegations made by the trio during a public event in Abuja—Amaechi’s 60th birthday—where they accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of exacerbating poverty over the last two years.
APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, dismissed these claims, calling them baseless. He argued that the trio, despite occupying high-ranking positions between 1999 and 2023, failed to effectively address poverty or enact meaningful economic reforms during their time in office.
Morka criticized their records, accusing them of rent-seeking, corruption, and mismanagement. He specifically pointed to Amaechi’s 24-year tenure in government roles without notable anti-poverty achievements, stating that his recent comments reflect a personal longing to return to government-funded benefits.
According to Morka, the criticisms from Atiku, Amaechi, and El-Rufai stem from their inability to adapt to the new economic environment shaped by President Tinubu’s reforms, which prioritize transparency, productivity, and a market-driven economy.
He argued that Tinubu’s government is correcting structural imbalances inherited from previous administrations, including unrealistic exchange rates and an overreliance on imports. Morka noted that figures like Atiku and Peter Obi had benefited from the former system and now oppose reforms that threaten their economic interests.
The APC highlighted several achievements of the current administration:
Removal of fuel subsidies, which ended systemic corruption and fuel shortages.
Harmonization of exchange rates, enhancing Nigeria’s global competitiveness.
Increased government investment in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and welfare.
A rise in the minimum wage to ₦70,000 per month in some states.
Economic growth of 4.6% in the last quarter of 2024, despite a global decline in oil prices.
A shift toward local production, driven by initiatives like the Dangote Refinery and increased manufacturing activity in regions like the South East.
Morka concluded by asserting that Tinubu’s reforms, while causing short-term economic strain, are essential for long-term national prosperity. He said the administration remains focused on sustainable development and will not be swayed by what he called “politically motivated attacks” from those seeking a return to the old system.
