Atiku and His Son Face Loss of Traditional Titles Amid New Adamawa Indigene Rule.

In a significant development from Adamawa State, former Vice President and 2023 PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, along with his son Aliyu Atiku, are set to lose t

heir traditional titles. Atiku held the prestigious title of Waziri Adamawa, while his son was Turaki Adamawa.

Atiku was honored with the Waziri title in February 2023 by the current Lamido of Adamawa, Mustapha Barkindo. However, a recent directive from the Adamawa State Government has changed the rules for traditional leadership roles. The government now requires that all kingmakers and members of traditional councils be natives of the specific chiefdoms or emirates they represent.

According to this new policy, only people from certain districts within Adamawa are eligible to hold these positions. For example, only indigenes from Yola South, Yola North, Girei, Mayo-Belwa, Song, and Zumo can serve on the Adamawa Emirate Council, and only natives of Mubi North and Mubi South qualify for the Mubi Emirate Council.

Since Atiku and his son hail from Jada Local Government Area in the Ganye Chiefdom, they no longer meet the indigene requirement for the Adamawa Emirate Council. This means they stand to lose their traditional titles, which have long been tied to their roles within the Emirate.

The Waziri Adamawa title is a very senior position, second only to the Lamido of Adamawa, so this is a notable shift in the region’s traditional leadership landscape.

This new rule seems aimed at ensuring that traditional leadership is maintained strictly by local indigenes of each chiefdom or emirate a move that could reshape how titles and influence are distributed across Adamawa.

It will be interesting to see how this directive affects other traditional council members and the political dynamics within the state going forward.
