Baba-Ahmed Urges ADC to Field Strong, Unpredictable Candidate for 2027 Presidency.
Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, running mate to Peter Obi in Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election, has advised the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to choose a presidential candidate for 2027 who would be difficult for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to defeat.
Speaking in an interview, Baba-Ahmed cautioned against selecting former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the coalition’s candidate, noting that APC has already developed strategies to counter him, having defeated him in two past elections.
“If you bring out Atiku, they already know how to beat him,” Baba-Ahmed said. “You need a candidate they can’t easily predict or target.”
He acknowledged that Atiku is welcome to contest and would be supported if he won, but stressed the need for a fresh and less predictable face to challenge the APC effectively.
Baba-Ahmed emphasized President Bola Tinubu’s long-term political strategy, noting that Tinubu planned and worked toward the presidency for 16 years, even stepping aside in 2015 to support former President Muhammadu Buhari.
He questioned whether any politician in the current coalition is willing to make such sacrifices or engage in such long-term planning.
“With all due respect to Atiku, he has contested in almost every election since 1993,” Baba-Ahmed said. “But who among the coalition members is ready to step back and say, ‘Let someone else go first, and I’ll wait eight years’? That’s what Tinubu did.”
In a separate interview, Baba-Ahmed supported Peter Obi as a presidential candidate, arguing that Obi’s performance in the 2023 election—despite being contested—demonstrated he had significant public support.
“Peter Obi should not return as a vice presidential candidate. He got nearly 10 million votes in 2023. That should count for something,” he said.
He also challenged the idea that only a coalition can defeat Tinubu and the APC, pointing to the Labour Party’s 2023 performance.
“There was no coalition in 2023. Yet Labour defeated both APC and PDP. It’s not only coalitions that win elections—it’s about building the right narrative and having the right candidate,” Baba-Ahmed added.
