Benue Attacks: No tribe can be wiped out — SGF.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has declared that no individual or group can eliminate an entire t
ribe from the earth.
He made this statement during the distribution of Federal Government relief materials to survivors of the Yelewata attacks at an emergency camp in Makurdi.
Having visited the attack site and the hospital where the injured are being treated, Akume condemned the attacks, describing them as unjustifiable and akin to ethnic cleansing.
He emphasized that such violence would never succeed because it is not allowed by God. He recalled how over six million Jews were killed during the Holocaust, yet their population has since grown threefold. He described the attacks, killings, and displacements as inhumane.
Akume urged the people of Benue, especially those from Yelewata, to remain committed to peace despite provocations.
He also affirmed President Bola Tinubu’s dedication to preserving Nigeria’s unity and sovereignty, stating the President will do everything to ensure Nigerians live safely.
Expressing his condolences, Akume encouraged the people not to lose hope in life or the government.
Former Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbe, speaking at the event, lamented the loss of humanity in the country. He noted that even in wars, children and women are usually spared, but these attacks harmed even infants.
Ogbe praised the victims as some of the most hardworking citizens, who consistently contribute to the nation’s food supply. He warned that no society could endure such violence and recalled how the people of Benue fought for Nigeria’s unity in the 1960s, insisting that these attacks must not continue.
Senator Jacob Gyado called on the people to maintain their faith in President Tinubu’s administration.
Earlier, the SGF visited Yelewata to meet with local leaders and later handed over relief materials and a cash donation to internally displaced persons (IDPs).
