Benue Bishops Oppose Emergency Rule, Urge Support for Governor Alia.
The Benue chapter of the Charismatic Bishops Conference of Nigeria has rejected calls
by some religious leaders for the declaration of emergency rule in the state.
Speaking in Makurdi, Archbishop Alexander Nyoonkyegh, the State Overseer of the conference, emphasized the importance of unity and support for Governor Hyacinth Alia, describing him as a fellow servant in God’s work who deserves encouragement, not political destabilization.
Nyoonkyegh stressed that what Benue needs is cooperation among its people to address insecurity, not a military takeover or emergency administration. He warned that such a move might lead to the appointment of an outsider to govern the state, referencing the situation in Rivers State, where a non-indigene was appointed sole administrator.
Quoting scripture, the archbishop reminded fellow Christians that leadership comes from God and that the faithful are expected to respect those in authority. He called on religious leaders to pray for the governor’s success and highlighted his ongoing efforts to improve security and develop the state.
Nyoonkyegh also praised President Bola Tinubu for his intervention in Benue’s security crisis. He welcomed the deployment of Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, to the state, noting that since his arrival, there had been a reduction in attacks.
He concluded by expressing hope that the recent improvement in security would continue and that peace would be restored in the region.
