Benue hopeful killings will end with President Tinubu’s visit.

Benue State is optimistic that the recent wave of killings will stop following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visit today. There is also hope that political tensions among key f

igures will be resolved.

Governor Hyacinth Alia expressed confidence that the President’s visit shows strong support for the state’s leadership and efforts to restore peace.

“With the deployment of personnel and equipment in Benue, we hope this will bring an end to attacks not only here but also in other parts of the country. The visit signals that the President stands with the governors to end the violence,” Alia said.

President Tinubu, accompanied by security and intelligence chiefs, will receive detailed briefings on insurgent activities and hold a town hall meeting with citizens to discuss solutions.

The recent attacks near Makurdi resulted in at least 147 deaths, sparking protests by local youths.

Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, assured the public that troops are actively working to restore peace. Speaking at a meeting with traditional rulers, he described the situation as personal and vowed to end the violence.

The Defence Headquarters dismissed claims that internal sabotage contributed to the attacks, with Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau stating that there is no credible evidence supporting such allegations. He emphasized that the violence is part of ongoing clashes mainly between farmers and herders over land and resources in Nigeria’s Middle Belt.

The Joint Task Force, Operation Whirl Stroke, led by Maj. Gen Moses Gara, reiterated its commitment to peace through both military and non-military measures, promising to identify and prosecute those responsible for violence.

In preparation for the President’s visit, Benue declared a work-free day, exempting essential services.

The Benue House of Assembly called for urgent government action to prevent what they described as a looming genocide, appealing to the President to enforce laws against open grazing with military and police support.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the killings and urged that those responsible be brought to justice.

Senate leaders accompanying the President expressed sympathy for victims and emphasized plans to organize a national security summit to address insecurity across Nigeria.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) called for immediate action, stressing the importance of protecting civilians, investigating the violence thoroughly, and providing support to vulnerable groups.

Meanwhile, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) deployed relief materials, including food and household items, to displaced persons, coordinating with state agencies and security forces to assist victims.
