Benue Killings: President Tinubu Pressures Security Chiefs to Act.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has demanded accountability from Nigeria’s top security officials over the ongoing violence in Benue State, particular
ly the massacre in Yelewata where 147 people were killed. During a visit to the state, the President criticized the failure to arrest any of the perpetrators and urged immediate action to halt the bloodshed.
Tinubu visited victims in the hospital and met with security officials, political leaders, and traditional rulers at the Government House in Makurdi. He challenged the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, directly, asking why no arrests had been made. He also instructed the Department of State Services (DSS) and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) to boost intelligence efforts and work with communities to identify and capture those responsible.
The President emphasized that ensuring peace is vital for national development and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting Governor Hyacinth Alia and the people of Benue in restoring security and rebuilding affected communities.
At the meeting, Governor Alia repeated his call for a state police system and requested a Federal Government intervention fund to help victims and rebuild infrastructure destroyed in the repeated attacks.
Monarch’s Strong Message
The Tor Tiv and Chairman of the Benue State Council of Traditional Rulers, Prof. James Ayatse, warned that the violence was not merely communal conflict, but a systematic and long-term campaign by armed herders and bandits to seize land. He emphasized that mislabeling the crisis prevents effective response and called for urgent federal intervention.
Ayatse added that Tiv communities in Nasarawa State have also suffered similar displacement and accused some politicians of exploiting the crisis for political gain. He appealed to the President to act decisively and end the violence, citing the historical sacrifices Benue people made during the civil war in support of national unity.
President Tinubu Responds
President Tinubu assured stakeholders of his willingness to work toward a lasting peace and said a follow-up meeting would be held in Abuja to discuss concrete solutions. He acknowledged the suffering of Benue residents and pledged to convert the current tragedy into a pathway for progress.
Warm Reception in Makurdi
Despite heavy rainfall, crowds lined the roads to welcome President Tinubu to Makurdi. Supporters, including motorcycle riders, followed his convoy as it made its way to the town hall venue.
