Bode George Expresses Disappointment Over PDP Defections.
Chief Bode George, a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed deep disappointment over the defection of key party figu
res, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Senate President David Mark, to the newly established African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Although Atiku has yet to officially confirm his departure from the PDP, he has played a central role in bringing together opposition figures under the ADC platform ahead of the 2027 general election. David Mark, who now serves as the interim national chairman of the ADC, has formally resigned from the PDP, citing internal party issues.
Other notable defections include former governors Liyel Imoke (Cross River) and Emeka Ihedioha (Imo), both long-standing PDP members who have also joined the ADC.
Speaking during an interview , George described the situation as heartbreaking, likening the PDP to a “political Iroko tree” that is now being deserted by some of its founding members. He criticized the defectors for contributing to the PDP’s internal problems and questioned their motivations.
“I’m very saddened. Yes, the party has its issues, but those leaving helped create them. I urged them to reflect: Is the PDP truly beyond repair, or are personal ambitions at play?” he said.
George emphasized that the PDP is still capable of resolving its internal conflicts through dialogue and unity, noting that efforts were underway to address the crisis when the defections occurred.
He also dismissed suggestions that the ADC could become a major opposition force, arguing that the party lacks the experience and organizational depth to effectively challenge the ruling party in the way the PDP has done historically.
