Bootcamp Empowers Young Women to Overcome Generational Barriers.

The Love for Change Women Foundation (LCWF) has highlighted the technology gap affecting girls in underserved communities, warning that limited access to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) opportunities is restricting their potential as future innovators and leaders.

At the conclusion of the INNOVAT STEAM Bootcamp 2.0 in Lagos, the Foundation’s Founder and Executive Director, Mrs. Modupeola Bello Olukoya, emphasized the importance of providing girls with opportunities to explore, innovate, and lead, breaking longstanding barriers.

The eight-week program engaged over 200 participants virtually, with 75 exceptional girls attending the in-person finale. The bootcamp introduced new elements such as robotics, Python programming, and a Fashion & Design Workshop in partnership with Lisa Folawiyo Studio. For many participants, this was their first exposure to advanced technology and creative innovation.

Olukoya noted, “Our participants are not just acquiring skills; they are gaining the confidence to lead and innovate.”

She also acknowledged the vital role of partnerships in sustaining such initiatives, praising the Lagos State Government and other supporters while calling for increased collaboration to expand the program nationwide.

Plans are underway to create an Alumni Fellowship to keep participants connected to mentorship and future opportunities, aiming to cultivate a new generation of female tech leaders who will transform innovation and leadership in Nigeria and beyond.

The Project Assistant, Ms. Bukola Adeyemi, explained that many girls in underserved communities lack access to technological skills that could change their futures. The bootcamp teaches coding, data analysis, critical thinking, and problem-solving to help them envision careers as STEAM leaders.

Building on last year’s success where 90% of participants showed increased interest in STEAM careers this year’s program expanded its reach and introduced new components for greater impact.

The bootcamp also included sessions on leadership and emotional intelligence led by Ms. Oluwatoyin Banjo, a global development leader and entrepreneur. Banjo stressed the importance of equipping young women to confidently navigate male-dominated fields, emphasizing self-awareness and emotional intelligence as crucial for seizing opportunities and driving change.

Overall, the program’s comprehensive approach integrates technical skills with leadership and resilience training, inspiring participants by showcasing successful women in STEAM fields. This holistic effort aligns with LCWF’s broader mission to promote sustainable mentorship, practical learning, and creativity.
