Buhari Commends Adesina as AfDB Presidency Nears Conclusion.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari has praised Akinwumi Adesina for what he called an “outstanding performance” as President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), as Adesina’s second and final term comes to a close in August 2025.
In a statement, Buhari expressed pride in Adesina’s accomplishments and recalled his own role in supporting Adesina’s appointment for both terms. He described Adesina’s leadership as exceptional, highlighting that under his tenure, the Bank’s shareholders were more satisfied than ever.
Dr. Adesina, a son of Nigeria, has delivered an exceptional tenure,” Buhari said. “He has set a remarkable standard of excellence and I am proud to have played a part in advancing his career.
Buhari credited Adesina’s success to determination, faith, and grace, calling him a source of inspiration. He also extended his best wishes for Adesina’s future.
Adesina, Nigeria’s former Minister of Agriculture, became AfDB President in 2015 and was re-elected in 2020. He is the first Nigerian to lead the Bank.
Following the conclusion of his term, Mauritania’s Sidi Ould Tah has been elected as Adesina’s successor. Tah’s appointment was confirmed after a vote by the AfDB Board of Governors during the Bank’s annual meetings in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. He will take office on September 1, 2025.
