Call for Applications: Facilitated Cooperation for AI in Science (CSA).
The European Commission is inviting proposals for a new initiative titled Facilitated Cooperation for AI in Science”, aiming to enhance the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in scientific research across Europe.
Program Goals
The initiative seeks to:
Create a Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) for AI in science.
Identify major long-term research challenges where AI can drive breakthroughs.
Support the development of EU-wide coordination and infrastructure for AI-based science.
This effort aligns with recommendations from the Scientific Advice Mechanism and supports the European Commission’s policy priorities, especially in competitiveness, sustainability, and social impact.
Key Activities
Selected projects should:
Engage large networks of scientists and AI experts to identify areas where AI can significantly enhance scientific discovery.
Propose specific pilot areas across various Horizon Europe research clusters.
Address both scientific and technical challenges, including AI’s role in:
Enhancing research processes (e.g., lab automation, literature analysis)
Enabling frugal, energy-efficient, and trustworthy AI
Improving collaboration between AI systems and human researchers
Evaluate current gaps in data access, infrastructure, skills, and support systems needed to integrate AI into science at scale.
Involve stakeholders across research, industry, startups, civil society, and government in designing and testing possible models and frameworks.
Develop a roadmap to better coordinate efforts between scientific disciplines and AI developers.
Promote public engagement through activities like citizen science and awareness events.
Expected Outcomes
Projects funded under this call should:
Produce a strategic agenda identifying research areas where AI can enhance European science.
Provide practical recommendations for improving EU-wide AI infrastructure, including access to data, computing, and expert talent.
Build a community of researchers, including citizen scientists, working with AI in science.
Promote transparency, collaboration, and open science principles.
Eligibility
Open to any legal entity, including those outside the EU, provided they meet the Horizon Europe criteria.

EU Member States (e.g., France, Germany, Spain, etc.)
EU Overseas Countries and Territories (e.g., Aruba, Greenland)
Associated countries (e.g., Albania, Norway, Ukraine, United Kingdom)
