Canadian Woman Sues Phone Company After Losing $1.8M in Bitcoin SIM-Swap Scam.
Raelene Vandenbosch, a pharmacy manager from Canada, is taking legal action against Rogers Communications and Match Transact Inc. following a 2021 SIM-swap scam that resulted in the theft of her Bitcoin, which was worth about \$531,000 at the time and is now valued at around \$1.8 million.
According to Vandenbosch, a hacker impersonating a Rogers technician convinced an employee at a Match-operated phone kiosk in Montreal to share their computer screen. This gave the hacker access to her account and allowed them to transfer her phone number to a new SIM card, even though she was in British Columbia at the time.
She has filed lawsuits in Ontario, Quebec, and B.C., accusing the companies of negligence, privacy violations, and breaching their contract. She is seeking compensation equivalent to the Bitcoin’s 2021 value, additional damages, and a public acknowledgment of wrongdoing.
Rogers and Match have argued that the dispute should be resolved through private arbitration, referencing a clause in her Rogers mobile contract. However, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Anita Chan ruled that while most of the claims must go through arbitration, Vandenbosch’s request for a public apology can be heard in court due to its relevance to the public interest.
Rogers stated that it continually updates its security measures in response to evolving fraud tactics. Vandenbosch, however, challenged the arbitration clause based on new B.C. consumer protection laws enacted in March 2025, which prohibit such clauses in phone contracts. Justice Chan determined the new rules do not apply retroactively.
The B.C. Attorney General’s office confirmed that these updated rules only affect disputes initiated after March 31, 2025.
