Club World Cup: Maresca Plans Squad Rotation as Chelsea Battle Heat and Fatigue.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has announced plans to rotate his squad for their upcoming Club World Cup group stage match against Brazil’s Flamengo, citing h
igh temperatures and player fatigue after a long season.
With both teams tied at the top of Group D—each having secured 2–0 wins over LAFC and Esperance de Tunis—Friday’s match is set to determine who advances as group leader.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference on Thursday, Maresca explained the physical toll on the players and the need for tactical adjustments.
“It’s tough due to the heat,” Maresca said. “We’ll have to rotate three to five players per game. It’s unrealistic to expect players to maintain peak performance for 11 straight months.”
To manage the conditions, he has shortened training sessions and placed more emphasis on tactics than physical drills.
Chelsea returned to training for the tournament soon after winning the Europa Conference League on May 28, shortly after wrapping up their Premier League campaign. Maresca emphasized that although it feels like pre-season, the competition is serious and their goal is to win.
Addressing recent news about winger Mykhailo Mudryk being charged with an anti-doping violation by the English FA, Maresca voiced his support.
“Misha is a Chelsea player, and I trust all my players,” he said. “I haven’t spoken with him lately, but last time we talked, he was doing well. I don’t have further details at this point.”
Chelsea will face Flamengo with both teams vying for the top spot in Group D as they head into the knockout stage of the tournament.
