Farouk Aliyu, a close associate of former President Muhammadu Buhari, has debunked claims that the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) faction within the All Progressives Congress (APC) plans to leave the ruling party.
Speaking during an appearance on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Aliyu, who described himself as part of Buhari’s inner circle, firmly stated that the CPC bloc has no intention of exiting the APC.
“There’s no truth to it. None of us from the now-defunct CPC is planning to exit APC,” he said. “The CPC’s certificate was among the foundational documents used to establish the APC. This is our party—where would we go?”
Aliyu, a former Minority Leader in the House of Representatives, also clarified that Buhari did not support the reported defection of former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai to the Social Democratic Party (SDP). He criticized El-Rufai for allegedly reacting negatively to being denied a ministerial role.
“Politics is about dialogue and representing collective interests—not just those of former CPC members but also former PDP members,” Aliyu added. “Engaging all factions now will help reduce political tension in 2027.”
He also emphasized that the APC would not sit back and allow the Atiku Abubakar-led opposition coalition to seize power, describing them as a mismatched alliance. He expressed confidence that the APC’s choice of presidential candidate would disrupt their plans.
Aliyu recalled that in 2013, Buhari led the CPC into a merger with the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), and a section of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to form the APC—a union that successfully unseated President Goodluck Jonathan of the PDP in 2015.
