Customs Denies Extortion Claim by U.S. Returnee at Lagos Airport.
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) at Murtala Muhammed International Airport
, Lagos, has denied allegations of extortion made by Oke Adhekegba, a Nigerian returning from the United States.
In a statement on Monday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Usman Abdul, said a full investigation has been launched to clarify the situation.
Comptroller Effiong Harrison, who oversees the command, explained that Adhekegba arrived on British Airways flight BA-75 from London on May 16, 2025, at approximately 6:47 p.m. He was reportedly carrying 10 pieces of luggage containing various new items including 15 pairs of shoes, 22 bottles of perfume, 12 bags, and numerous clothing items.
The total value of the goods was assessed at ₦3,113,574, with a calculated Duty Paid Value (DPV) of ₦1,000,004, based on a valuation of \$1,948.15 and the exchange rate of ₦1,598.22 to the dollar at the time.
Harrison stated that the import charges—comprising Import Duty, VAT, CISS charges, a Surcharge, and ECOWAS levies—were legally applied and fully remitted to the federal government. The customs inspection was carried out by two officers: Chief Superintendent KO Adebayo and Assistant Superintendent CC Ugboma.
Reaffirming the agency’s commitment to professionalism and transparency, Harrison emphasized that the command does not tolerate misconduct by either its staff or passengers. He also noted that the command remains open to scrutiny and encourages lawful compliance by all travelers.
While the investigation continues, the customs service stressed that duty must be paid on all taxable imports in accordance with the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023.
