Dalori Takes Over as Ganduje Steps Down as APC Chairman Due to Health Reasons.
Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has resigned as National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing health-re
lated reasons after serving for 22 months. His resignation takes immediate effect.
Following Ganduje’s departure, Deputy National Chairman (North), Alhaji Ali Bukar Dalori, has been appointed Acting National Chairman. This interim arrangement will stand until the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) convenes to appoint a permanent successor.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, confirmed the resignation in a statement released in Abuja. He noted that President Bola Tinubu, the party’s National Leader, has directed Dalori to assume leadership temporarily.
In his resignation letter, Ganduje thanked President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve and expressed appreciation for the confidence placed in him during his tenure. Morka highlighted Ganduje’s efforts to strengthen party unity, boost internal democracy, and enhance APC’s electoral strength, including overseeing successful defections from opposition parties and legal victories affirming the party’s leadership.
The APC praised Ganduje’s leadership and wished him well in his recovery and future endeavors. His resignation came as a surprise to many at the party’s headquarters in Abuja, sparking speculation among staff and members.
Earlier on the day of his resignation, Ganduje had led a delegation to visit Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago, offering condolences for recent flooding and attacks in the state. Just a day prior, he had represented the party at a consultative meeting with INEC.
Sources within the party suggest that recent tensions—especially at a disrupted APC North-East meeting in Gombe, where delegates protested the omission of Vice President Kashim Shettima’s name during a regional endorsement of President Tinubu—may have contributed to Ganduje’s decision.
Despite the change in leadership, all other members of the APC’s National Working Committee (NWC) will remain in their roles. A substantive national chairman is expected to be elected at the party’s National Convention in December.
Dalori, who now steps in as acting chairman, is a seasoned politician from Borno State. He has previously served as a five-term local government chairman, two-term state assembly member, special adviser to the Borno governor, and a board member of the Nigeria Railway Corporation. He became Deputy National Chairman (North) after Senator Abubakar Kyari was appointed Minister of Agriculture.
Ganduje is the sixth person to serve as APC’s national chairman, having taken over from Alhaji Abdullahi Adamu.
