Death Toll in Benue Attacks Rises to 20 – Governor Alia

The number of deaths from recent attacks in Benue State’s Ukum and Logo Local Government Areas has risen to 20. Governor Hyacinth Alia confirmed this during a phone conversation, revealing that initial reports showed five bodies were found in Gbagir. Later, two more were discovered by civilians searching for missing persons.

In a simultaneous attack on Logo, police recovered 12 more bodies, bringing the total confirmed deaths to 20. The state government has reassured residents of its commitment to security and urged them to provide timely information to security agencies.

Earlier, Benue State Police spokesperson Sewuese Anene reported that a large group of armed men had entered the Sankera area with the intent to attack. Police responded and confronted the attackers in Gbagir, where five people were killed. Another attack occurred in Logo before security arrived, leading to 12 more deaths. The police and other agencies are still pursuing the attackers, who are believed to have retreated into nearby forests.

The Commissioner of Police, Steve H. Yabanet, warned against spreading unverified information online, which could cause panic. He reiterated the command’s determination to restore peace and encouraged public cooperation.

Additionally, earlier this year, three communities in Otukpo Local Government Area—Emichi, Odudaje, and Okpamaju—were attacked, resulting in five deaths. These incidents occurred shortly after the killing of 11 people in Otobi, also in Otukpo.

Governor Alia, speaking after a church service in Makurdi, condemned the violence and discouraged communities from taking the law into their own hands. He stated that a joint security strategy is being developed in partnership with the Office of the National Security Adviser to address the killings.
