Delta Defections Shock and Hurt PDP – Damagum

Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Umar Damagum, described the recent defections in Delta State—including Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and other top party members—to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as both shocking and painful. He emphasized that the PDP had heavily supported Delta, including backing the governor and his predecessor, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, who was also the party’s vice-presidential candidate in 2023.

Damagum, speaking at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja, announced that the party would set up a caretaker committee to manage the Delta State chapter. He stressed that despite the setback, the party places its trust in God and remains determined to recover.

He encouraged party members to brace for the 2027 elections and highlighted that the outcome won’t be decided solely by the number of governors or officials, but by the will of the people. Referencing Peter Obi’s 2023 performance despite lacking gubernatorial support, Damagum expressed confidence that Nigerians would choose wisely.

He criticized current government policies, saying they have not positively impacted the average citizen, and urged unity within the PDP to push for change.

  Ezenwafor Confident of Anambra Victory

Jude Ezenwafor, PDP’s governorship candidate for Anambra State, expressed confidence in his chances, promising to deliver strong leadership, particularly in security. He said his success would draw interest from governors across the country.

APC Welcomes More Defectors

APC National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje confirmed the party had welcomed Oborevwori and other Delta officials. He claimed more PDP governors would soon follow, and that the APC was gaining strength ahead of the 2027 elections.

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule said the wave of defections was due to President Bola Tinubu’s inclusive leadership, which has attracted support from across the political spectrum.

Coalition Talks Unshaken by Defections

Former APC official Salihu Lukman stated that the ongoing coalition plans among opposition groups would not be derailed by the defections. He reaffirmed the coalition’s commitment to providing Nigerians with a strong alternative in 2027.

Saraki Calls for Rebuilding PDP

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki urged those intending to leave the PDP to do so, so that committed members could focus on rebuilding. He warned against the risks of a one-party state and encouraged party faithful to stay focused, united, and determined.
