Delta State Welcomes Oborevwori and Other PDP Leaders to APC.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and several key leaders from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) will officially join the All Progressives Congress (APC) today. This high-profile political shift marks a major event for Delta State, which has been a stronghold of the PDP since 1999.

Oborevwori, who made the switch from the PDP last week, will be presented with the broom, the symbol of the APC, by Vice President Kashim Shettima and APC National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje at a rally held at the Cenotaph in Asaba.

Yesterday, Ganduje held several meetings with Oborevwori and other defecting officials in preparation for the historic event. Over 21 APC governors and political leaders are expected to attend, with at least 10 having already arrived in Asaba by 6 p.m. These include Hope Uzodimma (Imo), Bassey Otu (Cross River), and Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), among others. Former APC National Chairman Senator Adams Oshiomhole also joined the arrival.

The defection has been likened to a political tsunami, shaking the state’s political landscape. Apart from Oborevwori, prominent PDP figures including former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme, and Speaker Emomotimi Guwor will also join the APC.

Leaders in the APC, including Festus Keyamo and Senator Joel Onowakpo-Thomas, have praised the defection, describing it as a new chapter for the party in Delta State. Delta APC officials are urging members to turn out in large numbers to welcome the new members, with party spokesperson Valentine Onojeghuo calling it a milestone for the state’s political future.

Former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege also welcomed the new members, emphasizing that the defection aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision for the country. He called on party members to unite for the continued progress of Delta State and Nigeria.

Senator Peter Nwaoboshi further expressed that the defection would enhance the APC’s political structure in the state, aiding President Tinubu’s re-election bid.

In a show of support, Stella Okotete, Executive Director at NEXIM Bank, called the move a strong step toward inclusive governance in Delta. She urged APC members to embrace the new arrivals and focus on party unity and service to the people.

Meanwhile, some critics have accused the government of attempting to create a one-party state. However, Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga dismissed these claims, reaffirming that the administration supports multi-party democracy.

Senator Ned Nwoko, a former PDP member who now leads in APC, called on Governor Oborevwori to embrace a transformative approach to politics, leaving behind past practices in favor of progressive governance for Delta State. He emphasized the need for change to fulfill the promises of the APC.

The defection of these prominent leaders signifies a potential shift in the political direction of Delta State, and APC officials are hopeful that it will lead to sustained growth and success in future elections.
