DSS Alleges Cannibalism, Security Killings by IPOB Members in Court Testimony.

A Department of State Services (DSS) official testified at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday, alleging that members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), engaged in cannibalism during one of the agency’s operations.

According to the DSS operative, seven ESN members were found with human heads, and some were reportedly eating human flesh for what they claimed was spiritual protection. The witness said IPOB and ESN’s activities had led to the deaths of over 170 security personnel across southeastern Nigeria.

The testimony was part of the ongoing terrorism trial of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu. Led by prosecutor Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), the DSS agent also revealed that Kanu allegedly imported a radio transmitter used to run Radio Biafra without the necessary licensing from the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC). The transmitter was reportedly smuggled into Nigeria illegally and later traced to Anambra State.

The DSS official also linked Kanu to the directive behind the 2021 Owerri prison break and the killing of Ahmed Gulak, a former presidential aide. He said an ESN member, Uzuoma Benjamin (alias Onye Army), confessed that Kanu instructed group members to attack security personnel and bury a fallen comrade, Ikonso, with 2,000 human heads—though only 30 were allegedly obtained.

The agent detailed how Gulak was killed on May 30, 2021. According to the testimony, IPOB members stopped the vehicle carrying Gulak at a checkpoint, questioned the passengers’ ethnic backgrounds, and shot him after discovering a Muslim prayer mark on his forehead.

The witness also described IPOB/ESN operations as heavily armed and violent, targeting police stations, traditional leaders’ homes, and public infrastructure. He added that the groups often hijack vehicles for operations due to a lack of resources.

During cross-examination by Kanu’s lawyer, Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), the DSS officer admitted there was no official record of when or how the radio transmitter was imported and said he was not aware of claims that a licensed clearing agent, Benka, was involved. He confirmed that the transmitter was found in a property in Anambra, along with firearms found under a mattress belonging to another individual, Benjamin Madubugu, who was charged with illegal possession.

The witness also said he was unaware that the Imo State Government had at any point attributed Gulak’s killing to political motives.

Justice James Omotosho adjourned the case until Thursday for the next prosecution witness.
