DSS Witness Uncovers Kanu’s Secret Radio Used to Spread Secessionist Agenda.
At the Federal High Court in Abuja, a witness from the Department of State Services (DSS) testified that Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), allegedly smuggled a radio transmitter into Nigeri
a by concealing it within household items.
Identified only as “Mister DDD,” the DSS operative told the court that the device entered the country without declaration to the Nigeria Customs Service. It was later hidden in the home of Benjamin Madubougu in Ihiala, Anambra State.
According to the prosecution, Kanu used the transmitter to promote separatist views and incite violence. The court admitted into evidence a certified copy of a search warrant issued in October 2015 by the Ihiala Chief Magistrate Court, along with a video that allegedly shows Kanu examining the transmitter and referring to it as a “nuclear weapon for Biafra.”
In the same video, Kanu was said to have warned residents in the South-East against disobeying IPOB’s May 31, 2021 sit-at-home directive, threatening violent consequences.
The DSS witness testified that Kanu’s broadcasts played a direct role in the economic disruptions caused by the enforcement of the sit-at-home order by IPOB’s armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
The prosecution presented additional evidence, including a flash drive containing 18 video recordings and 16 radio broadcasts allegedly made by Kanu. These were accepted by the court. A statement from Madubougu confirmed that the transmitter was imported without customs documentation.
The court also admitted a newspaper article in which an alleged ESN member claimed Kanu had ordered the collection of 2,000 human heads for burial rituals, though only 30 were reportedly obtained. The defence objected to the article’s admissibility, but the judge allowed it with a certificate of compliance.
Prosecutors requested that the court inspect the container holding the transmitter and other materials, which are currently secured at DSS headquarters. Justice James Omotoso approved the request and later admitted the container and the transmitter into evidence as exhibits PWY and PWZ, respectively.
The judge stressed the importance of a thorough examination of all evidence to ensure a fair trial. Further hearings are scheduled for June 18, 19, and 20, during which the prosecution is expected to conclude its case.
