Eight Sitting Governors Who Left PDP for APC.

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, formally announced his defec

tion from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday, June 6. The announcement was made during a ceremony at the Government House in Uyo, attended by top APC figures nationwide.

Governor Eno explained that the decision came after extensive consultations. He emphasized that the move was strategic, saying, “We are not joining APC from a position of weakness but strength. We’re bringing value and reconciliation to Akwa Ibom through this new direction.”

Several sitting governors have previously made similar moves from the PDP to the APC. Here are eight governors who switched parties while in office:

1.   Pastor Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom State)
His defection is expected to reshape the political future of Akwa Ibom State.

2.   Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta State)
His recent defection came as a surprise, particularly given Delta’s longstanding alignment with the PDP since 1999.

3.   Dave Umahi (Ebonyi State)
Switched to APC in November 2020 during his second term, citing dissatisfaction with PDP’s treatment of the Southeast.

4.   Ben Ayade (Cross River State)
Defected in May 2021, aiming to align with the federal government to facilitate more development projects.

5.   Bello Matawalle (Zamfara State)
Joined APC in June 2021 amid political unrest in the state. His move was seen as an effort to stabilize leadership.

6.   Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto State)
Initially left PDP for APC before the 2015 elections, later returned to PDP in 2018, and has been linked to a possible return to APC while still in office.

7.   Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto State)
Joined APC in 2014 during his governorship, playing a key role in the party’s 2015 electoral success.

8.   Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara State)
Governor from 2011 to 2019, defected alongside Bukola Saraki in 2014 during a major political shift in the state. Though he later returned to PDP, the move during his term was influential.

These defections have played a significant role in reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape over the past decade.
