Emiliano Martinez Would Excel at Manchester United as a Traditional Shot-Stopper.

If Manchester United sign Emiliano Martinez, the goalkeeper may need to overcome past tensions with fans, stemming from a 2021 incident where Martinez mocked Bruno Fernandes after a missed penalty that led to Aston Villa’s win at Old Trafford.

Despite moments of frustration, such as being sent off last season, Martinez is highly regarded for his exceptional shot-stopping ability — a skill increasingly undervalued in modern football but one that United urgently need to improve.

When United signed André Onana in 2023, much attention was given to his footwork and ability to play from the back. However, Onana’s shot-stopping weaknesses quickly became apparent, with costly errors in key matches contributing to United’s elimination from European competitions. His hesitance to play short passes and frequent mistakes have frustrated fans and staff alike.

Reports suggest United’s coaching staff, including Ruben Amorim, want a goalkeeper who prioritizes reliability and minimizes errors rather than one focused on ball distribution. This shift in priorities aligns with Martinez’s strengths.

Martinez’s career began with loan spells in England’s lower leagues, where fundamental goalkeeping skills were paramount. He maintained this focus through his rise at Arsenal, Aston Villa, and as Argentina’s first-choice goalkeeper, playing a crucial role in their World Cup and Copa America victories. He is known for his penalty-saving prowess and psychological gamesmanship during shootouts.

Martinez emphasizes saving shots over foot skills, stating, “By saving, I win titles.” His style recalls that of legendary Manchester United keeper Peter Schmeichel — both are imposing figures who command their defense and intimidate opponents.

Former player Mark Bosnich compares Martinez’s one-on-one style to Schmeichel’s, highlighting his confidence mixed with a hint of insecurity that fuels his determination.

While Villa reportedly value Martinez at around £40 million, and at 32 he does not fit United’s recent focus on younger prospects, his Premier League experience and big-match temperament offer invaluable leadership. Similar to Edwin van der Sar’s late-career signing, Martinez could bring stability and success to United’s goalkeeping position.

In summary, Martinez’s proven ability and commanding presence make him an ideal candidate to restore a winning mentality and solid defensive foundation at Old Trafford.
