Expert Warns of Autism Risk in Children Born to Older Fathers.
When it comes to having children, we often hear about the risks older women face. But what about men? New research and expert insight from Nige
ria suggests that paternal age matters more than most people think.
Dr. Yetunde Adeniyi, a child and adolescent psychiatrist and director of the Centre for Early Development, Learning and Care (CEFLC), has raised concerns about the growing link between older fathers and the risk of autism in their children. Speaking in a recent interview, Dr. Adeniyi highlighted a trend backed by scientific studies: men over 40 are significantly more likely to father children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).
Why Does Age Matter for Men Too?
While much of the focus has been on maternal health, scientists are now turning their attention to aging sperm. As men grow older, sperm quality naturally declines. This increases the chances of genetic mutations that can contribute to neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism.
“Paternal age is an important risk factor that’s often overlooked,” says Dr. Adeniyi. “Men who have children after age 40 are more likely to have children diagnosed with autism compared to those who start families earlier.”
Understanding Autism
Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental disorder that affects a child’s communication, behavior, and ability to interact socially. It typically appears in early childhood, and while the exact cause remains unclear, a mix of genetic and environmental factors are known to play a role.
Dr. Adeniyi is quick to dispel common misconceptions: autism is not caused by bad parenting or supernatural influences beliefs still held in parts of Nigeria. Instead, it’s a medically recognized condition that requires early diagnosis and ongoing support.
The Situation in Nigeria
Autism awareness is growing in Nigeria, but challenges remain. Dr. Adeniyi noted that better diagnosis is contributing to rising case numbers, with new children being identified weekly across all backgrounds. Unfortunately, most families are left to manage the condition on their own, often paying up to ₦300,000 per month for therapy without government support.
“Inclusive education and public funding for therapy services are urgently needed,” she added.
What Should Prospective Older Fathers Know?
Dr. Adeniyi isn’t saying men shouldn’t have children after 40 — but she is urging them to be informed. “People have the right to choose when to start a family, but it’s important to understand the potential risks,” she said.
Her message is clear: when planning for a family, both parents’ health and age matter. Knowing the risks can help families make informed decisions and prepare for the journey ahead.
Final Thoughts
As science continues to shed light on the importance of paternal health, it’s time we expand the conversation around family planning to include men — especially those considering fatherhood later in life. Knowledge is power, and when it comes to the health of future generations, being informed can make all the difference.
