Explosions in Doha as Qatar Closes Airspace Amid Escalating Iran–US Tensions.

On Monday, loud explosions were heard across Doha, the capital of Qa

tar, shortly after the country suspended all air traffic in response to rising military tensions between Iran and the United States. The situation escalated after Iran threatened retaliation for recent US airstrikes targeting its nuclear facilities.

According to reports, interceptors were seen lighting up the night sky as they neutralized incoming projectiles over the city. Qatar, located about 190 kilometers south of Iran across the Gulf, hosts the largest US military base in the Middle East Al Udeid Air Base  which also serves as the regional headquarters for the Pentagon’s Central Command.

Qatar’s foreign ministry confirmed the temporary closure of its airspace, calling it a precautionary measure in light of regional developments. Authorities stated they were closely monitoring the situation in coordination with international partners.

Earlier in the day, the US embassy in Qatar advised American citizens to stay indoors, citing heightened security risks. British and Canadian embassies issued similar warnings, urging caution among their nationals.

The tension stems from Iran’s response to US and Israeli military actions. On Monday, Iran’s armed forces warned the US of “serious, unpredictable consequences” following strikes on three of its nuclear sites. This follows Israel’s initial airstrikes on Iran on June 13, which significantly escalated the conflict.

Satellite imagery from June 19 revealed that nearly all of the 40 US military aircraft stationed at Al Udeid earlier in the month had been moved, a shift likely linked to the ongoing conflict.

In Bahrain, another Gulf state hosting US military forces, the US embassy moved part of its staff to remote work, and local government offices were also instructed to work from home as a precaution.

Despite the growing concerns, Qatar’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Majed al-Ansari, downplayed the warnings from foreign embassies, stating they were not necessarily based on credible or specific threats. He assured the public that the country’s security remains stable and emphasized Qatar’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to reduce regional tensions.

Meanwhile, the US State Department has advised Americans globally to remain vigilant due to the broader conflict between Iran and Israel.
