Federal Government Closes Enugu Airport for Urgent Runway Repairs.

The Federal Government has announced the temporary closure of Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu State.

This was revealed in a statement on Saturday morning by Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

Orah explained that the closure is due to the urgent need to fix a severely damaged section of the runway.

There’s been a sudden and serious break in the asphalt surface at a key point on the runway. Emergency repair work will take place from April 22 to May 6, 2025, she stated.

She added that the closure aligns with aviation safety regulations in Nigeria.

In line with civil aviation standards, FAAN has decided to close the runway during this time, Orah said.

She emphasized that the move is part of FAAN’s broader commitment to ensuring safety and improving airport infrastructure.

To protect passengers and modernize our facilities, no flights will take off or land at the airport while repairs are ongoing, she added.

Orah urged passengers and airport stakeholders to remain patient during the maintenance period.

We ask for understanding and cooperation from all users of the airport. Flights will be redirected to nearby airports. We regret the late notice and the inconvenience caused, she said.

Meanwhile, Air Peace had earlier announced it was suspending all flights to the Enugu airport due to worsening infrastructure and ongoing safety concerns.
