Federal Government Plans Intervention in Gas-to-Power Tariff Issues.

The Federal Government is preparing targeted interventions to address ongoing tariff and payment issues a

ffecting gas supply to major thermal power plants operated by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

A strategic meeting was recently held at NNPC Towers in Abuja. Participants included the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo; Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun; and senior NNPC Ltd. officials led by Dr. Salihu Jamari, representing the Executive Vice President for Gas, Power, and New Energy.

The discussion focused on resolving tariff challenges impacting the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant, Okpai Independent Power Plant (IPP) Phase 2, and Kano IPP Phase 1. These challenges include delayed payments and tariff shortfalls under the Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading (NBET) framework, which threaten the sustainability of gas-powered electricity generation.

In a statement issued by the Minister’s spokesperson, Louis Ibah, NNPC Ltd. warned that without prompt action, power supply in key regions could be disrupted, affecting both economic activity and public welfare.

Minister Ekpo emphasized the urgency of removing these bottlenecks to ensure the full potential of Nigeria’s gas-to-power infrastructure is realized, particularly for regions like Maiduguri and Kano, and for increasing output to the National Grid from the Okpai IPP.

Minister Edun stressed the need for collaboration among stakeholders to develop a sustainable financial model that guarantees the viability of these power plants while contributing to economic growth.

All parties agreed to reconvene soon with the Minister of Power to develop practical solutions on a short timeline to stabilize operations at the affected facilities.
