Flooding in Nigeria Affected Over 5.2 Million People, Claimed 1,237 Lives in 2024 — NEMA.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has reported that 5,264,097 people were affected by floods across 35 states
in Nigeria in 2024, resulting in the deaths of 1,237 individuals.
This was revealed during a meeting in Abuja between NEMA and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) focused on emergency response and flood disaster support.
Representing NEMA’s Director-General, Zubaida Umar, Assistant Director of Disaster Risk Reduction, Simon Katu, explained that the flooding led to the displacement of over 1.2 million people, significant damage to infrastructure, and widespread loss of livelihoods, especially in flood-prone communities.
Key impacts of the 2024 flooding included:
35 affected states and 401 local government areas
1,243,638 people displaced
16,469 injuries
116,172 homes destroyed
1,439,296 hectares of farmland impacted
Urban poor drainage systems, climate change, and rising population pressures worsened the situation, according to the agency.
Looking ahead to 2025, NEMA projects that 12 states and 43 LGAs are at high risk of flooding, while 13 states and remaining LGAs fall within lower risk zones.
In one specific case, the Mokwa area flood affected more than 3,000 people, displaced over 1,000, and resulted in over 100 deaths, with many others injured or missing.
To mitigate future disasters, NEMA launched a nationwide preparedness campaign, extending awareness and planning efforts to all states and communities — an expansion from 24 states in the previous year.
The agency also plans to conduct simulation exercises in Anambra and Kano States to improve readiness and response.
JICA’s Project Formulation Advisor, Keisuke Matsushita, recommended the formation of a technical committee to develop plans for capacity-building initiatives in Japan.
