Former Equatorial Guinea Anti-Corruption Chief Faces 18-Year Prison Sentence.

Baltasar Engonga, former Director General of Equatorial Guinea’s National Financial Investigation Agency, is on trial in Malabo and could face up to 18 years in prison for corruption-related charges.

Engonga, who has been in custody at the infamous Black Beach Prison since September 2024, is accused of embezzling public funds, illicit enrichment, and abusing his authority during his time leading the Directorate General of Insurance and Reinsurance from 2015 to 2020.

According to Le Bled Parle, prosecutors allege that Engonga devised a sophisticated scheme to divert state funds for personal use. During a recent court session, the prosecution requested sentences of eight years for embezzlement, four years and five months for unlawful enrichment, and six years and one day for abuse of office. They also called for a fine exceeding 910 million CFA francs (approximately \$1.5 million) and a ban on holding public office.

In a shocking development, investigators discovered over 400 sex tapes during searches of Engonga’s home and office. The videos, reportedly recorded with consent, involve prominent women, including spouses of ministers, security officials, and relatives of senior government figures. The tapes were stored on CDs and hard drives, many of which have since been leaked online, causing widespread public uproar.

Engonga is being tried alongside six other former high-ranking officials, including Carmelo Julio Matogo Ndong and Florentina Iganga Iñandji. Prosecutors describe the group as part of an extensive network involved in the misappropriation of public funds.

The trial is ongoing, with the defense expected to begin presenting its case later this week.
