Ghana will host an Extraordinary Meeting of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers in Accra from April 22 to 23, 2025, as part of the official launch of the sub-regional bloc’s 50th Anniversary celebrations.
Rather than a purely ceremonial event, the anniversary launch will serve as a strategic platform to reflect on the Community’s milestones over the past five decades. The meeting will bring together Foreign Affairs and Finance Ministers from all member states to discuss pressing matters, particularly the recent withdrawal of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger—members of the Alliance of Sahel States—from ECOWAS. A comprehensive report from this meeting will be presented to the Heads of State for further deliberation.
Scheduled to follow immediately after the Golden Jubilee opening ceremony at the Accra International Conference Centre on Tuesday, April 22, the event will officially begin at 11:00 AM and kick off a year-long celebration across the region.
Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, shared these updates during a press briefing on Thursday. He noted that the event will also feature the unveiling of the official anniversary theme and logo.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria, who currently chairs the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State, is expected to attend the launch, alongside other regional leaders and representatives from the recently exited Sahelian nations.
Minister Ablakwa described Ghana’s selection as host as a “well-deserved honour,” highlighting the country’s historic role in promoting Pan-Africanism, regional integration, and unity.
Established on May 28, 1975, ECOWAS was founded to advance regional integration, harmonize policies, and coordinate collective responses to shared challenges facing West .
