Gov. Alia Confirms Rising Death Toll in Benue Killings: 55 Feared Dead
Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has confirmed that the number of deaths resulting from recent attacks by armed groups in Logo and Ukum local government areas has reached 55.
During a visit to some of the affected communities, the governor disclosed that 27 bodies had been recovered in Logo LGA and 28 in Ukum LGA.
“Since the attacks began, we’ve been retrieving bodies. As of Friday, more were found, and by Saturday, the number had increased,” he said.
He also mentioned that some families requested to bury their loved ones immediately, and security operatives provided protection to allow them to do so.
Describing the situation as a war, Governor Alia said, “This is a real war. No one can sleep peacefully. We know those responsible. This is the only state we have. I sympathize with you during this painful time.”
Despite the severity of the attacks, the governor praised the efforts of security agencies and urged the Federal Government to provide additional support to help stop the violence and assist displaced citizens.
In response to the unrest, Ukum Local Government Chairman, Jonathan Modi, has declared a 24-hour curfew following protests by youths over attacks in Gbagir and Ityuluv on Thursday. He said the curfew is necessary to help security forces manage the situation.
