Governor Otti Vows Action on Rising Insecurity in Abia North.

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has pledged a tougher response to rising insecurity in the Umunneochi and Isuikwu

ato areas. Speaking during a monthly media briefing in Umuahia, Otti condemned the recent attack on the state’s Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Chaka Chukwumerije, along the Umunneochi–Okigwe route.

Though the commissioner escaped unharmed, the details of the incident remain unclear. The state’s Information Commissioner, Prince Okey Kanu, confirmed that security agencies are investigating but declined to share specifics due to the sensitive nature of the case.

Otti noted that criminal activities in the Umunneochi corridor had previously decreased following the launch of “Operation Crush,” a special security initiative. However, with new reports of violence, he promised a renewed crackdown.

“We’ve seen disturbing security breaches in Umunneochi and parts of Isuikwuato recently,” Otti said. “Our response has been to step up security efforts. Residents can already see improvements in recent days.”

He emphasized that securing lives and property remains a top priority, stating, “Without security, no other government initiative can succeed.”

Otti also mentioned a recent raid in Ugwunagbo near Aba, where a criminal hideout was dismantled. Several suspects were arrested, although a soldier lost his life in the operation.

On health, the governor reported progress under “Project Ekwueme,” which involves renovating 200 primary health care centers. Many of these facilities are already operational and equipped to handle basic medical needs, with only complex cases referred to higher-tier hospitals. He added that secondary and tertiary facilities, including the Abia State University Teaching Hospital, are undergoing upgrades, with phase two of renovations underway. The state is also preparing to launch a major “Medical City” project.

In education, over 5,000 newly hired teachers have completed orientation and are ready for deployment. An additional 4,000 will soon be recruited to meet the needs created by free, compulsory education policies that have significantly increased school enrollment. Renovation of schools continues, with 20 institutions being converted into “smart schools.”

At Abia State University, hostel upgrades are nearing completion, and new accommodations are being built. The faculties of agriculture and law are also preparing to relocate to the Uturu main campus. Power has been restored to the campus, and a 15–20 megawatt embedded power station is in development to support both the university and the surrounding community.
