Governor Radda Launches ₦100 Million Climate-Smart Farming Initiative in Katsina.

Governor Dikko Umar Radda of Katsina State has introduced a ₦100 million Climate-Smart Agribusiness Empowerment Scheme aimed at improving agricultural practi

ces for smallholder farmers across the state.

The programme, launched in collaboration with the African Union Development Agency–New Partnership for Africa’s Development (AUDA-NEPAD), is designed to promote climate-resilient and commercially viable farming.

Funding for the initiative includes ₦63.75 million from NEPAD and ₦36.25 million from the Katsina State Government. Governor Radda described the programme as a significant step toward shifting local agriculture from subsistence to commercial scale.

“This initiative is a strategic investment in our farmers, economy, and future,” he said. “We’re equipping our people with the tools and knowledge to farm smarter and more sustainably.”

Radda also called on agricultural extension workers and other stakeholders to ensure effective implementation and monitoring of the initiative. He emphasized the importance of accountability and proper use of resources.

Salisu Jabiru Tsauri, National Coordinator of AUDA-NEPAD in Nigeria, described the scheme as part of broader efforts to meet the African Union’s Agenda 2063. He highlighted that the programme provides farmers with access to quality seeds, tools, training, and market connections.

He also noted the state government’s ongoing efforts to support agriculture, including dam construction and repairs, procurement of 20,000 metric tons of fertiliser for the 2025 planting season, and the distribution of solar-powered irrigation pumps.

Maryam Sodangi, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Sustainable Development Goals, said the programme is part of a long-term plan to build climate-resilient farming systems and enhance food security amid changing environmental conditions.

The scheme is expected to directly benefit farmers by improving productivity, increasing incomes, and strengthening local food systems through access to improved inputs, modern techniques, and market opportunities.
