Gowon, Akinyemi Express Hope for Sahel Nations’ Return to ECOWAS

Former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, and former Foreign Affairs Minister, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, have expressed confidence that Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso will rejoin the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) following renewed diplomatic engagement.

Speaking at the “ECOWAS at 50” international conference hosted by the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs in Lagos, both leaders emphasized the importance of African unity and ongoing dialogue to restore ties with the Sahel nations.

The three countries officially withdrew from ECOWAS on January 29, 2025, after prolonged tensions and resistance to returning to democratic rule. Despite accepting their withdrawal, ECOWAS left the door open by offering a six-month window for reconsideration.

Gowon, one of ECOWAS’s founding leaders, called the exit unfortunate but expressed optimism about reconciliation, highlighting ongoing efforts aimed at peaceful resolution. He humorously suggested rebranding the bloc to include the Sahel, proposing the name “ECOWASS” as a symbolic gesture of inclusivity.

Akinyemi praised Nigeria’s behind-the-scenes diplomacy, notably during a fuel crisis in Niger when Nigeria reportedly sent 300 fuel tankers as a goodwill gesture. He cited this as an example of regional solidarity that could pave the way for restored relations.

German Consul General Weert Börner also addressed the gathering, cautioning African nations against over-reliance on Russia and encouraging a focus on regional security and trade. Marija Peran, a representative of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, called for deeper economic integration and action against political instability and crime.

Professor Eghosa Osaghae, Director-General of the NIIA, expressed optimism about ECOWAS’s future, noting its enduring resilience despite current challenges.

The event was attended by various dignitaries, including Lagos State officials, former ministers, presidential candidates, and academic experts.
