Iran Holds State Funeral for Officials Killed in Conflict with Israel.

Iran held a state funeral on Saturday for around 60 senior military officials, s

cientists, and civilians who died in its recent conflict with Israel. The ceremony took place in Tehran, where thousands of mourners gathered, chanting slogans against the United States and Israel while carrying images of those killed.

The funeral, attended by President Masoud Pezeshkian and other top officials, featured coffins draped in Iranian flags and displays of the types of ballistic missiles used during the conflict. Rear Admiral Ali Shamkhani, a senior adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, appeared at the event with a cane, having been wounded during an Israeli strike.

Supreme Leader Khamenei did not attend the funeral but had previously addressed the nation via video, declaring victory in the war, which ended earlier this week with a truce.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi praised Iran’s resistance, emphasizing that the country had sacrificed lives but not honor. He also stated that surrender is not part of Iran’s vocabulary.

Among the deceased were high-profile figures such as Major General Mohammad Bagheri, who will be buried with his wife and daughter, both of whom were also killed. Nuclear scientist Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi and his wife will also be laid to rest, while Revolutionary Guards commander Hossein Salami is set to be buried on Sunday. Four children and four women were among the casualties.

During the conflict, the United States joined Israel in targeting Iranian nuclear facilities, claiming their actions had significantly set back Iran’s nuclear program. Israel asserted that its operations had “thwarted Iran’s nuclear project,” while threatening further action if Iran attempts to rebuild.

Iran, however, rejected these claims. Khamenei said the damage inflicted by the strikes was minimal. In the aftermath, former U.S. President Donald Trump criticized Khamenei on social media, claiming he had spared the Iranian leader’s life during the war and had been working on easing sanctions before halting talks in response to Iran’s hostile remarks.

Araghchi responded firmly, urging Trump to adopt a more respectful tone if he truly wanted to negotiate and reaffirming the Iranian people’s resolve against external threats.

According to Iran’s health ministry, Israeli strikes resulted in the deaths of at least 627 civilians, while Iran’s retaliatory attacks killed 28 people in Israel.

While Trump announced plans for new nuclear negotiations, Iran denied any such talks were scheduled and passed legislation halting cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
