The Kano State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has demanded that Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a factional leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and others seeking to join the APC must first publicly apologize for any derogatory remarks previously made against President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and other party leaders.
This position was stated by the APC Chairman in Kano State, Abdullahi Abbas, who noted that while the party is open to receiving new members, including Kwankwaso, such individuals must fulfill certain conditions, including an open apology as a gesture of respect and reconciliation.
Abbas explained that the APC, under its Renewed Hope agenda, is actively welcoming defectors from various political backgrounds. He acknowledged the ongoing rumors about Kwankwaso possibly joining the party and described the APC as his only remaining political option, claiming that he had severed ties with other political groups.
Reaffirming the party’s openness, Abbas said ward-level chapters have been instructed to begin registering new members, regardless of their background. However, he stressed that while the APC respects the constitutional right of citizens to join any party, those who previously insulted party leaders must show remorse before being accepted.
He also warned that joining the APC should not be seen as a safe haven for politicians seeking to evade justice or escape the scrutiny of anti-corruption agencies such as the EFCC and ICPC. He emphasized that the APC would not tolerate cult-like behavior disguised as political activity.
In conclusion, Abbas reiterated that all prospective members must register at the ward level and would be free to participate in internal party democracy without favoritism.
