Veteran actor and former spokesperson for the Labour Party Presid
ential Campaign Council, Kenneth Okonkwo, has publicly accused former presidential candidate Peter Obi of betrayal during an internal crisis within the party.
In a recent interview, Okonkwo, who left the Labour Party in February 2025, revealed that Obi disregarded his advice and resumed support for the controversial Julius Abure-led faction of the party. Okonkwo claimed that Obi was misled by party officials who told him the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had recognized the faction’s leadership.
Okonkwo stated, “If anyone was betrayed, it was me. Peter Obi went back to a group I warned him against, despite publicly committing to integrity. I told him aligning with them would damage his political future.”
He described the Abure-led faction as undemocratic and alleged that they were being used by government forces to destabilize Obi’s influence. Despite Okonkwo’s warnings, Obi reportedly reconnected with the faction and publicly endorsed them just days later.
Okonkwo also noted that after Obi’s public endorsement, a member of the faction mocked him by sending a video of the event. He said Obi only began distancing himself from the group after INEC publicly disassociated from Abure.
The Labour Party has been embroiled in a prolonged leadership conflict, with accusations against the Abure faction of financial misconduct and anti-democratic behavior. These issues, Okonkwo said, led to his resignation from the party.
He concluded by emphasizing that he would not retract his position, stating that his stance was rooted in principles and a commitment to democratic values.
