Lagos Begins Full Enforcement of Single-Use Plastics Ban.
The Lagos State Government has officially started enforcing the ban on the use and distribution of single-use plastics (SUPs) across the state, effective July 1, 2025.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, announced this during a media briefing in Alausa, Ikeja. He stressed that violators will face prosecution under the state’s environmental laws.
Wahab explained that the enforcement follows an 18-month transition period given to residents, manufacturers, and vendors to adapt to sustainable alternatives.
“The ban was not imposed arbitrarily but due to urgent environmental concerns,” Wahab said. “Lagos is a coastal city with a small land area but houses about 10 percent of Nigeria’s population, making it vulnerable to ecological problems.”
He added that the state had planned the phased ban since 2024, starting with styrofoam food packs, and now all single-use plastics are included. “The time to transition has been ample, and enforcement begins July 1.”
Items banned and reasons:
Styrofoam packs: Banned due to their non-biodegradable nature and environmental harm.
Plastic straws: Prohibited to reduce plastic pollution and encourage eco-friendly alternatives.
Disposable plastic cups and cutlery: Banned to limit single-use plastic waste.
Lightweight nylon bags: Outlawed because they are neither reusable nor biodegradable and contribute heavily to pollution.
Wahab urged the public, especially business owners and market traders, to cooperate with the government in achieving a cleaner and more sustainable Lagos. He noted that the ban is part of wider environmental efforts to protect the ecosystem, reduce flooding, and improve public health.
