Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Project Expected to Boost Nigeria’s Economy by $12 Billion Annually – Uzodimma.
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, a major infrastructure project under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, is anticipated to significantly enhance Nigeria’s economy. According to Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, the highway could
contribute up to \$12 billion annually to the country’s GDP over the next decade.
Uzodimma described the highway as more than just a transportation route, highlighting its potential to connect nine coastal states, link major seaports, and unlock key trade routes. He emphasized its expected impact across various sectors, including agriculture, industry, tourism, and marine commerce.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, praised the quality and speed of the project’s execution. He noted that leading international financial institutions such as Deutsche Bank and the Development Bank of Southern Africa had visited the site and commended its value and progress. Umahi stated that no external loans have been secured for the project so far, as the construction company, Hitech, has been self-funding the work, which is now approximately 80% complete.
A 30-kilometre stretch from Ahmadu Bello Way to Eleko Village in Lagos has already been finished ahead of schedule, reflecting strong planning and execution.
President Tinubu, during the commissioning of this completed section—Phase 1, Section 1—expressed satisfaction with the progress, calling it a source of pride and fulfillment as part of the larger 750-kilometre coastal highway.
