Lagos-Calabar Highway: Umahi Targets December for Completion of Key Section.
Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, has announced that several fin
ancial institutions have expressed strong interest in supporting major federal infrastructure projects, including the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway.
Speaking to journalists after inspecting ongoing work on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and associated bridges, Umahi revealed that the government aims to complete Section One of the project by December.
“I’ve held meetings with various financial institutions, and they are eager to be part of this. Once Section One is completed and approved, it will unlock significant financial support,” Umahi said. “International funders have inspected the work and were impressed by the scale and quality, which is a major achievement.”
The minister clarified that while a 30km stretch of the highway has already been constructed, it will not be open to traffic until an additional 17.47km segment of Section One, Phase One, is completed.
“We’ve completed 20km initially, followed by another 10km. The contractor, Hi-Tech Construction, is pushing to finish the remaining 17.47km. Once connected, motorists will be able to travel from Ahmadu Bello Way to the Lekki Free Zone via the coastal highway,” he explained.
Umahi also confirmed that the highway will be tolled to ensure sustainable maintenance. “Regardless of whether tolls are applied, all roads require consistent upkeep,” he said.
